Interview with Last Japan for Breaks of 10

Ahead of tomorrows party Not Shy caught up with the headliner for the launch party Last Japan for the Breaks of 10 blog and here's what he had to say.

So for those who don’t know you – how would you introduce yourself in 5 words?

Producer who specialises in bass.

It must have been a pretty epic 12 months for you man, I first heard of you a year or so ago when you won the warm-up DJ competition on for a party at Chew The Fat at Cable. What had you been up to before you won the competition and how did that change things for you?

Before the competition I had just been trying to get my self gigs here there an everywhere and also working on remixes and original productions. It certainly got me a lot more exposure, to make a name for myself.

You are definitely one of the producers of the moment, you’ve been signed to Fat Boy Slim’s Southern Fried Records. Have you met the main man yet? How did it feel to be signed to such a long-standing label?

Haha no I haven’t met hi or even seen him play yet! It was an amazing achievement, it just helps you get to that next level and also pushes you to try and make your productions better with each song.

Who else on the label would you like to work with and why?

NT89, he did a really good remix for me and Marco Del Horno, and im really into his style of production so I think we could rustle up something good!

You’ve also been busy putting tracks out under the guise “Brockout” – can you tell us a bit more about how this came about? The tracks have a bit more a dutch house feel to them - would you agree?

The Brockout is Ben and me are good friends from uni and it was about time we started doing some productions together as have the same musical tastes and writing styles. So far it seems to be going well, we’ve had really amazing feedback from out first single ‘Shake Down’

I see also that you are gonna be heading into the Rinse FM studio to spin with Marco Del Horno before playing at the Do It! launch party. Is this your radio debut? You nervous?

Nah I’ve been on Rinse before in January, which I was nervous about then but I’ve been in the studio with Marco Del Horno a few time and seem him do his thing so im pretty chilled out about it now.

You and Marco have worked together for your release “Pilled Up Again” and also you collaborated for Brockout – how do you work differently when producing with other artists?

I wouldn’t say I work too differently from when im doing my own stuff, I just end up doing less as the works being slit between two or more people. My main focus normally is on the synth work.

Do you have any more collaborations in the pipeline? Or you concentrating on more solo work?

Yes quite a few in the pipeline, that I don’t want to jinx right now haha, but some people might know about my collab with Ajapai which can be heard on my soundcloud.com/lastjapan and I’ve got a new single called Big Man, where I worked with three MC’s called Hypa, Marcie and Gstar.

Who are the big players for you in the scene right now? Who are you looking up to? Who's tracks influencing you are the moment?

Rusko’s album, Manare – Speakeasy, and Redlight - Stupid are all huge productions and inspire me to write music!

Are there any unsigned artists that you are feeling right now?

Mmm tough one, I realy like Stereo Killaz remix of Jho Fm

What’s been your highlights of the year so far?

My remix of Xtatic Truth by Crystal Fighters being on Skins was next level!!

What more can we expect of Last Japan for 2010?

Touring, and lots of releases once I finish my dissertation ha!

What's your top 5 tracks right now?

Manare – Speakeasy
Redlight - MDMA
Nero - Innocence
Warrior One - Bad Like Jimmy Cliff VIP
Lomania - Detboi
