Five Minutes with The Lovely Jonjo
With our Superhero party only days away we catch up with this weekends headliner
The Lovely Jonjo.
So for those who don’t know you – how would you introduce yourself in 5 words?
Small, Blonde,Fun,Loyal,Lovely
Can you tell the readers what you were up to before your days of Trash?
I was manager and Buyer of a Japanese clothing brand called Superlovers which took me to to Tokyo 5 times a year and did the door of a few bars.
How did you get become part of Trash, were you a regular before it moved to The End and how did you meet Mr Alkan?
I was a mental regular that went down and pogo right in front of the Dj booth so i surpose that's how I met Mr Alken.
Rory had seen me play out at bars and put me forward after I was doing the Trash door for a few months.
Were you sad to see it go or pleased to start the party fresh with DURRR and how do you think the two parties were different?
Yes and no. I was shitting it as I went from warm up to doing Erol's slot and at first was worried how people would judge.
I got over it as I thought if we didn't do Durrr some other people would have tried to fill it's shoes so we all just went for it.
At Durrr we had bands every week and Trash once or a few times a month.
What do you think has happened to mid-week clubbing?
Where have all the parties gone?
I think students are a bit more savvy, will now have a big night out at weekend where they can see a few bands and DJs for £10-15. Also I think bar dancing has come back into culture in last few years more than before.
How have things changed for you since DURRR closed it's doors?
Apart from Monday now being my Sunday, I have played all over the world which is amazing.
I started my gay night Hot Boy Dancing Spot as I was tired of Music in gay clubs.
Can you tell me a bit more about Hot Boy Dancing Spot?
When doing my research I saw that it's been going since 2006?
I did start it back in a small bar in Soho but wasn't the right time.
I have been doing them all over the East End for the last few years.
It has really hit a cord with people and gets better every month.
I have done events in Barcelona, Tel Aviv, New York and the Venice Art Bienalle.
There is also a party for Freeze art Fair coming up.
Have you been spending any time producing your own music?
Not as much as I would have liked.
I've been in the studio recently working on a few remixes and some Solo stuff too.
Keep you posted.
x
It seems harder and harder for DJs to get recognised without also being a producer, why do you think this is?
We are in an age where kids can be making tunes and remixes from a really early age and there are a hell of a lot of DJs too.
If someone is producing tracks and getting them onto Blogs, if people love the tunes then they are more likely to go hear that act.
We ask everyone we interview for Do It! - are there any unsigned bands, producers or up and coming DJs that are catching your attention?
I love love love what Dan Avery (Stopmakingme) plays at Fabric and at Hot Boy Dancing Spot. Also Rory Phillips is so on fire at the moment, ha.
Siver Columns are my top band right now.
Just been getting into this little disco band from Paris called Showgirls, a little bit like Glass Candy. I am loving Tanlines and The Swiss at the moment too.
What's your top 5 tracks right at the moment?
Hercules & Love Affair - Get Into The Groove
Carte Blanche - Gare Du Nord
Scissor Sisters - Fire With Fire (Rory Phillips Remix)
Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs - Dipper
Crookers & Roisin Murphy - Royal T
Thanks Jonjo
See you at the Super Rave
